Accepting love.

Something that has been on my mind recently is love. Now I’m not talking about the romantic kind as some of you may be thinking. Instead I’m talking about the love that you share with your friends or family in some cases it’s also the same love that you share with your neighbours, also the people you pass on the street, the people you work with and the ones you live with. Some of you may argue with me here but who’s to say you can’t love all those people the same?

I’ve been pondering on what it actually means to love. In the bible it describes what it means in a really poetic way. Christian or not I think you would agree with the answer;

Love is large and incredibly patient. Love is gentle and consistently kind to all. It refuses to be jealous when blessing comes to someone else. Love does not brag about one’s achievements nor inflate its own importance. Love does not traffic in shame and disrespect, nor selfishly seek its own honor. Love is not easily irritated or quick to take offense. Love joyfully celebrates honesty and finds no delight in what is wrong. Love is a safe place of shelter, for it never stops believing the best for others. Love never takes failure as defeat, for it never gives up. TPT

This is a slightly longer translation but if you read it slowly and think about loving like it says or reading it as if you were someone else and imagining being loved like that. If you are anything like me you’ll start to get a little emotional. Maybe because you haven’t felt love like that before or maybe you have and you are remembering the ones who gave you that love.

Until recently I would always long to be loved like this, to be treated in a way that didn’t mean that I had to do something or give something. I also really wanted to love others like that. But something would always trigger me. I’d start to get angry and that would blow me up and defeat what it means to love.

In the recent months I’ve realised that it is impossible to love like this without Jesus

Before you love someone you have to be loved. Right? Thinking from a human perspective- that will never work because then no one will love first.

That is exactly where Jesus comes in. We love because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19

God’s love for us is constant and never failing, with that in our minds we can love others with the same passion for whatever happens to us weather people love us in return or not, there will always be a God that’s fighting on our side for us! ‘Love doesn’t selfishly seek it’s own honor’ ‘it never stops believing the best for others’ Imagine no arguments, not having to hide anything because you know that whatever you say won’t separate the love because it is pure and it NEVER gives up. People cannot love like that. It is possible to be loved in a way that seems impossible. But this love is ONLY found in Jesus Christ.

Before you realise that, or before you accept that; you will try and try to love like that but sooner or later you will get, angry or impatient and possible even give up.

Knowing that you are loved by God is the most important thing. To know your true worth, that you are accepted by God!

Why do we try to find acceptance by people when God is for us? Why do we look for identity and security among others when Jesus is saying look to me and I will give you all that you need. We will always be deceived to put our trust and hope into a temporary means of satisfaction. You see we are being damaged by the world that tells us we must be and do certain things. If you don’t like to drink at the age of 18, who even are you? You’re wearing a V-neck and flares? Take them off! Even though people say to be yourself and live who you want to be. that’s not particular true as if it’s anywhere out of society then you will be an outcast.

In all honesty, I fell into the trap too. Like many people today, I didn’t realise I was allowing myself to become a slave. I didn’t recognise who God was because I was waiting and searching in all the wrong places. We must stop allowing our sinful desires take over us. Sin is anything that comes in between you and God. Sin came as the result of disobedience right in the start and will be here until Christ comes again! Sin includes our shame and our lack of understanding that we are beautifully and wonderfully made!

I believe that if we are not content with who we are deep down and if we are constantly searching for more then we are sinning, we are turning our heads away from God. For we simply weren’t made to wear fig leaves and walk with our heads down and our bodies covered. What I mean is that we need to start living how Christ intended us to live.

Stop posting pictures that don’t reflect who you are. Start accepting that Christ is pursuing you! Stop pretending that you are ok when you feel terrible. Start being honest with God and receive his transforming power that can change you in a way that you cannot comprehend.

“That the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.” Romans 8:21
